SALMON & DUSK soundtrack

Abandoned Soundtrack cover

Being a music obsessive, I've always tried to make it a fundamental part of the podcasts and the new SALMON & DUSK is no exception.

This time around, I wanted to go for a less electronic sound to, among other things, reflect the musical interests of the characters. However, Tom Waits was out of the question and, although I looked, there simply isn't that much high-quality, royalty-free rockabilly out there. I also had a look for something suitably "film noir" but, after concluding that no people have the same conception of what the term means, abandoned that idea.

Finally, I stumbled across XeMa's "Abandoned Soundtrack" - which is freely available at Jamendo. To my mind, it has the perfect slightly-gritty, slightly post-rock feel for our heroes and their late night adventures. At times there's the odd hint of Mogwai, at others the somewhat desolate feel of David Dundas's soundtrack to Withnail & I (One of my favourite films, I probably needn't add). You can find the link to the album below.

The other track I'm often asked about is, of course, the theme. This is a track by an artist called Dilvie, which is still available at his website. For the new series, I've remixed it slightly, to give it a little more 'body' and so that it would fit with the new soundscape.

I'll try to keep this page updated with more music as the series progresses.

SALMON & DUSK: SERIES ONE features the characters from HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY. However, there is no need to be familiar with that book or its events. SIDEWAYS offers the perfect jumping on point for the uninitiated.

SALMON & DUSK: SERIES ONE

London's strangest and least trustworthy detectives return in an occasional series of new stories.

Kilbey Salmon has charm, a quick gob and an instinct for self-preservation. Nero Dusk has a lot of patience, a grumpy demeanour and a way with his fists. Neither of them belong to a London anyone would recognise. Together, they scrape together a living finding things that never existed and solving crimes that never happened for people desperate enough to seek their help. Mostly, they get themselves in trouble. And when there's trouble for Salmon & Dusk, it's the strangest sort of trouble London has ever seen...

Starting the last week of July:

1: Sideways

Theo Cartwright is being stalked by someone she's never met. Out of the corner of her eye, she can see a man that isn't there when she turns to look. A man in a long grey coat and Doc Marten boots. A man called Kilbey Salmon.

My Chalk Outline... dusted down?

my chalk outline

My Chalk Outline is about to take a brief holiday before reappearing in a slightly condensed form later this year.

If you've yet to sample this story in its original format, you've still got a few days to reacquaint yourself. If you've yet to get acquainted, you can play it cool for a while longer and wait until you bump into each other again or pounce now, while you've got that chance.

Cheers!

2009 Already...

in

Another year with nothing much to report as yet. Last year was a bit of a blur in which I moved, married and began a new job - all of which prevented me from getting anything ready to podcast. This year, I intend to put this right.

At the moment I'm finishing a second draft of How to Disappear Completely with one eye on the publishing prize, but I'm also knee deep in planning a follow-up (or four). What shape this takes really depends on what I feel like writing when I put down tools on draft 2. I have an idea for a slighter younger audience that seems rather attractive to me at the moment in its simplicity. It's also a tempting notion to write something to (perhaps pointlessly) fight the Twilight tide. You know, like with a plot and stuff. Another option will be a series of novellas along the lines of My Chalk Outline.

You can now keep track of my vacillations at http://twitter.com/mykebartlett, along with various other jottings, ruminations and bitter ramblings.

Hope you're all well and hope to have something worth listening to soon!

Myke

Welcome!

bloglogo

At last, rather than scattering news, podcasts and other mutterings across a collection of blogs, websites and social networks, I've decided to consolidate my web presence (such as it is) in a single site - this site, in fact. It's sort of in beta mode at the moment, but I'm hoping any possible bugs will be flattened by the time the next podcast launches.

So, what's here?

Well, primarily, Mykebartlett.com is your portal to all things Salmon and Dusk: podcasts, pictures, merchandise and up to the minute news about things that might not end up happening. Maybe I'll call that section 'Empty Promises'?

What else?

Salmon and Dusk

Well, there's this piping hot blog, which I'll use to ramble on about how long it's taking me to complete the second draft of How to Disappear Completely or to drop hints about the new Salmon and Dusk story that will appear toward the end of the year. (That's another exclusive empty promise.) I'll also use it to answer any questions or queries anyone sees fit to ask. About anything, really. I like questions.

Electricity

There's a section on Electricity - the other podcasted novel. (Between you and me, it's a much better produced podcast than How to Disappear Completely...)

There are downloads (or will be, soon.) At the moment you can listen to both novels in their entirety by clicking on the relevant link. (Look left if you can't be bothered clicking through to the downloads page.)

KilbeyTheoNeroMeatmarketer

There's a gallery of artwork, currently relating solely to Kilbey and friends. Some made by listeners, some made by my good friend Victor.

Most excitingly, for me at least, there's a forum which will launch properly to coincide with the next podcast. Feel free to try it out in the meantime.

I hope you all enjoy the new site, for which I shall remain very grateful to Jason Andrews, who kindly offered to build it.

I'm certainly looking forward to playing with it over the months to come.

Cheers!
