Hello and Thanks!
I'm glad you're back, Myke. I like these new stories, and I found your reasoning about changing names and such to be quite convincing. I think you are better than ever (new mic?). It can't have been that long ago when I listened to whatever book you were podcasting at the time, but it's been too long. It was so good to find that episode in my podcatcher (from a Huffduffer feed belonging to Julie D of Forgotten Classics, and now your Facebook wall). Since I have a blog myself these days, I was able to share links in a post. (You might see the link in the stats. )
It's a bit embarassing that it took me so long to find you, but on the up-side, I had lots of eposodes to listen to, and it was a great immersive experience.
It could be that my background is noisy as well, because I truly haven't noticed any annoying noises in the background of the podcast.
All the comments I want to make about the Nero story are spoilers, so I won't make them.
My first thought when I got to this website and saw the great new banner was, "new mugs!" I don't see that design in the shop but I'm not complaining. I still have my old one.

Hi Gail! I wrote a long reply
Hi Gail!
I wrote a long reply this morning but then seem not to have saved it, as it's disappeared into the cyber-ether. Ah well. Glad you've found the new stories and equally glad you're enjoying them. Very good of Julie D to point you in their direction and I appreciate you putting the word out on your blog too!
I think the episodes are sounding a bit better, although it's the same Blue Snowball Mic I used for Electricity. I have switched to the GarageBand software post-Sideways, and I think that's actually made a big difference, as it seems to balance the sound levels a little better. Also, I've been having a lot of fun putting the recordings together, so hopefully that helps too. Glad the Bangkok background noise hasn't been an issue, I think it was okay in the end. My favourite bit of background noise is during OotP, episodes 2 and 3, where you can just about hear some spooky sounding wind howling. I thought it worked quite well really.
If you do want to make some spoilery comments about the Nero story, go ahead, but maybe announce any spoilers beforehand. Something like:
**** SPOILERS ****
a bit of gap
And then the shocking truth here. That way we can chat about the content without endangering future listeners.
As for the mugs - great idea! I've spoken to the artist this afternoon and there's a strong possibility something might turn up on the site soon. I still have my old one too. A great size for an afternoon cuppa, I find.
cheers,
Myke
sorry I missed it!
Or we could begin a different forum, just for chatting about the stories. THE STORIES - HERE BE SPOILERS!
But I'm not sure about that title.
**** POSSIBLE SPOILERS ****
Nero. I like Nero, and I was happy to have a Nero story. I like your Nero voice, too.
But what a sad ending for a love story! An interesting concept that sort of forced your hand, and it worked well as a story, with a nifty religion thrown in, too. Or do I mean nutty religion?
Question: How would Kilbey know about the cult but not Nero? There's a lot of unexplored territory in this universe.
***end spoilers***
I am deeply impressed by people who teach school, even for a year. My take is something on the order of, shoot me now! (Even volunteering got to be something of a pain. But it's all over now.)
As for sound, probably what I hear is the fun. If there were spooky wind sounds, I'm sure I thought it was deliberate. You don't have to admit these things are accidents, you know! lol
The large mug is a good size, and the handle is a good shape. Sounds like I will soon have a matched pair.
SPOILERY DISCUSSION
Hi Gail,
It's been a busy week since I've arrived home, so just quickly:

Glad you liked Nero's story. As with some of the best stories, the ending was the starting point, so Nero was never going to have a happy ending I'm afraid. Another time, maybe. As I think I said in After Dusk, I originally wanted to show more of their relationship, over a longer period of time, but it ultimately suited the story to keep it short and sweet.
I think the Church were a reasonably late addition, (mind you, the whole story was a late addition, replacing the one I'd already written) but I was quite happy with that idea.
As for how Kilbey would know, but Nero wouldn't... I rather assumed Kilbey would know from his Footmen days. Given Nero never was a Footman, I think there's plenty of things he's still in the dark about. I think one know-it-all is enough in that office!

Working on the mug, but haven't quite got the picture looking right yet. Will keep you updated!
cheers,

Probably just forgot
I hadn't realized Nero was never one of the Footmen. or more likely, forgot.
I don't remember if it's
I don't remember if it's really made explicit in HtDC that he wasn't a Footman, but we'll hear his backstory one day.
